Mini Hedgehogs
Mini Hedgehogs
Including members of the order monotreme, prickly animals have elongated snout that serves both as mouth and nose. This is the same muzzle that also sends electrical signals which help them to find insects for in gusto. Electroreceptive system in the muzzle is less complex than the platypuses, with only 2,000 in the long snouted electroplax and only 400 in the short-snouted. Electroreception they proved to be useful even if they became land animals because their snouts constantly wet. It is much easier to conduct electricity in water than in the field, which is why most animals with electroreception especially waters. However, scientists believe electroreceptors are being "selected against" because of the terrestrial echidnas rely far less on electroreception to seek food than their water counterparts.
