A giant stingrays stingray species that was captured in Thailand was claimed to be the largest freshwater fish. Why not, only an estimated weight of 450 kg, or almost half a ton.
Wide expanse of his body about 2 meters long and 2.1 meters. When found, the tail does not exist. If including their tail, stingrays estimated total length is about 5 meters.
Fish was arrested on January 28, 2009 during an expedition conducted by National Geographic in Thailand. The arrests led by biologists from the University of Nevada, zeb Hogan. The expedition was part of a giant fishing project Megafishes Project to document the 20th largest freshwater fish in the world.
The discovery of this giant stingrays give new hope for Hogan and his team even more than previous estimates. This could put a giant stingray in the top position of the Megafishes Project.
"Frankly, we do not know how heavy this stingray. But obviously, this giant stingrays potential to become the toughest clean-water fish, "said Hogan, who is also an Emerging Explorer at National Geographic.
The population of stingrays in Thailand is considered already be extinct, although the discovery of several new population started to increase lately. International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is now entering a freshwater stingray go into the list of endangered animals.
Before this discovery the largest giant stingrays, Hogan previously found a stingray with a length of 14 feet or about 4.3 meters near the Chachoengsao, near the city
Thailand.
