Manta rays (Manta birostris) is one of the largest species of stingray in the world. The width of the body from tip to tip of pectoral fin reaches almost 7 meters other (probably more because there are reports saying that there is a wide manta body reaches 9.1 meters). Manta can be found in tropical oceans around the world - approximately between 35o north latitude to 35o south latitude. Spreading a broad and unique appearance caused this fish has many names ranging from "Pacific manta, ""Atlantic manta, " "devil fish", to "sea devil". In Indonesia alone, manta rays have various local names such as check mark necklace, plampangan, and pari buffalo (probably because the body like the horns on his head so he is considered similar to buffalo).

Manta rays later categorized as "close to the threat" (near threatened) by the IUCN because although the amount has not been categorized as endangered, but in the future estimated population will shrink and eventually threatened with extinction. The population of manta rays are considered close to the danger due to high fishing activity and sea conditions are increasingly polluted, but the low ratio of their birth.
